HONDA ACCORD HYBRID
In 2005 Honda launched the Honda Accord Hybrid. The Accord Hybrid
expands Honda’s hybrid line, which already includes the Insight
and Civic Hybrid. The Honda
Accord Hybrid features a 3 Litre six-cylinder engine combined with
Honda’s Integrated Motor Assist hybrid system. The Accord
Hybrid is marketed as the highest-power, top-of-the line Honda Accord.
The Honda Accord Hybrid battery pack is comprised of 120 1.2-Volt
Nickel – Metal Hydride batteries which provides 144 volts
of energy. The hybrid features includes idle stop, regenerative
braking, and engine assist. In addition the 6 cylinder engine is
programmed to operate on three-cylinders below 3500 rpm when cruising
or coasting. When mild acceleration is required, the electric motor
provides the additional power. Only at higher revs or battery depletion
will the other cylinders kick in.

A feature currently only available in the Accord Hybrid system
is that climate control of the vehicle is powered by two electric
compressors rather than by a belt driven compressor. This means
that when the vehicle has stopped, the engine will shut off even
if heat or air conditioning is on.

Honda reports that the Accord Hybrid accelerates 0-60 Miles per
Hour (95 km/h) in just over 7.5 seconds which is half a second quicker
than the V-6 non-hybrid Accord.

Note: Honda's use of the series hybrid architecture,
results in better fuel performance on the highway than it does in
the city. This is opposite of the Toyota
Prius and the
Ford Escape Hybrid which use parallel hybrid systems. Read a
detailed explanation of the differences between series
and parallel hybrid systems.
