HONDA CIVIC HYBRID FUEL CONSUMPTION

A common question about hybrids is how much fuel will they save? Natural Resources Canada Energuide numbers for every vehicle in Canada are based on a specific testing methodology that measures fuel performance based on a “typical” drive cycle. Each consumer has a unique drive cycle of stop/go, urban/highway, and winter/summer conditions that determines a specific vehicle’s fuel performance and how close it will "match" the Energuide ratings.

There was limited accurate data available on the fuel performance of the Honda Civic Hybrid.  This section will be expanded as more information is acquired.

2002-2003 Honda Civic

Novex Courier- Committed to a Green Fleet
Novex Courier, which operates 17 Honda Civic Hybrids, provided detailed fuel efficiency information on three hybrids.  This information suggests that this hybrid model is performing within a reasonable range of its Energuide fuel performance ratings.

The City of Richmond operates two 2002 Toyota Prius and two 2002 Honda Civics. The average fuel performance of the two Hondas was 4.34 L/100 km.  One of the Civics, after 25,000 km has outperformed the Energuide ratings while the other after 9,325 km has met the Energuide City Ratings.

Performance on Hills
Information from two other Honda Civic Hybrids owned by Sustainable Strategies and the City of North Vancouver show the impact of hills on the fuel consumption.  The City of North Vancouver's operated in a hill environment and consumed considerably more fuel than the Honda Civic Hybrid owned by Sustainable Strategies which performed close to the Energuide ratings.
